The Ups, the Downs, and the Turning Points: A Story of 2024

2024 wasn't a year I "owned," as social media led us to believe. Instead, it was a year of shared experiences with a select few and fleeting moments.

Even so, you wouldn’t know it from my blog updates—or lack thereof. Despite the ups, downs, and turning points I’ve encountered over the past twelve months, I can surely conclude that my 2024 was peaceful. After all, I am nothing more than a uniquely crafted experience in a world filled with simulations and "what ifs."

The Highs: Moments That Took Me to Cloud Nine

As I mentioned, I currently work as an ESL Teacher. Truth be told, I entered my first official job with gold-tinted glasses. You may wonder why I used the "gold" analogy—hear me out. It’s not that I romanticized the role; I revered it! Predictably, the initial wonder wore off, but not enough to make me quit and run for the hills.

Gold analogies aside, I recall many achievements reminiscent of my high school days. I aced several tests, earning incentives more than once. The glowing reviews from former students also bolstered my confidence. One student publicly commented how my initially challenging speaking pace became essential for their growth. Believe me, I hid my face for some time after that! Another student assessed my performance to my face.

Verbatim, he said:

"You know, Teacher K, I really wanted to leave your class. It was too difficult. I told my manager, but he advised me to give it one more week. I’m glad I didn’t."

But my favorite moment came from a recent graduate. He didn’t say much about my teaching—no words of "thanks"—but instead showed me his results. After four months of intensive classes, his exam scores had significantly improved. The relief and pride on his face were enough for me. Seeing students walk away with their heads held high is the best reward.

Outside work, I indulged in hobbies like crochet and digital art until I ran out of ideas. I also performed at the school’s Winter Festival, a team effort that spearheaded the opening ceremony. Through this, I met a few people I can genuinely call friends.

The Lows: Stumbles, Storms, and Silver Linings

Success wouldn’t feel as sweet without a few stumbles. Allow me to condense this into a single paragraph—I’d rather not ruin my mood or anyone else’s. First, I got written up for miscommunications and misunderstandings. Out of the four instances, only one was entirely my fault, and though I tried to make amends, the damage was done. I chalk it up to occupational hazards—nobody starts their professional journey fully prepared.

Through these challenges, I learned to handle workplace and personal issues with tact. I stuck to the book and responded with textbook professionalism, so I give myself a pat on the back for that.

Turning Points: Where Everything Changed

Many things changed for the better in 2024. I gained much and lost little—primarily colleagues who left abruptly or terminated their contracts early. My company’s morale hasn’t been high for months, but I’ve worked hard to separate that from my personal growth as a teacher. Some organizational changes didn’t sit well with me, but we’re all part of the pecking order. Still, I hold on to the hope for brighter days.

My self-respect has grown immensely, thanks to practicing mindfulness and awareness. Financial planning became another focus, and I’ll share more about that soon. Lastly, I’ve begun ticking off items on my bucket list, including certifications and national exams. Wish me luck!

Life Lessons: Nuggets of Wisdom from 2024

This year has overflowed with life lessons. Here are a few highlights:

  • You have a voice. Speak up in meetings about pressing issues. Advocate for yourself when someone encroaches on your peace.

  • Protect yourself with silence. This applies not only at work but also during personal moments. You don’t owe explanations unless absolutely necessary—use this wisely.

  • Master "hellos" and "goodbyes." They’ll serve you well in leaving a lasting impression. And remember, parting ways often requires learning to let go.

  • Choose your battles. No one at work is truly your friend. Casual banter is fine, but don’t compromise your values for acceptance. Save your energy for what matters most.

  • Celebrate small wins. Yes, you deserve that snack you've been eyeing at the store. Go get it. Treat yourself to that snack you’ve been eyeing. You don’t need an occasion or company to enjoy it.

Stepping into 2025: My Next Chapter Awaits

For 2025, I hope my turning point becomes a beacon of joy for years to come. Ambitious? Perhaps, but that’s how I plan to approach the next three years. I’ve made yet another bet I intend to win.

Here’s to more surprises, fewer "Oops!" moments, and plenty of "Awws." It pains me to know that one day, this peaceful routine may be replaced by a more pragmatic job. When the time comes, I’ll set aside my whimsical pursuits and prioritize income over personal happiness. But for now, I’ll cherish the blessings I’ve been given and treasure them for years to come.
